Hi, I’m Heather Gulliver, an apprentice technician at Hendy Skoda. I live in Bournemouth near Winton and Charminster. I went to Glenmoor and Winton academy for secondary school and then moved to Twynham sixth form where I studied sociology, English lang/lit and history. When I was a child, I wanted to be working in the car industry but I wasn't too sure where I wanted to work until the end of sixth form. I am very adventurous and I love to have an adrenaline rush. When I went to NYC this year, I did an experience where i was hung from the side of the 3rd tallest skyscraper in NYC.
What is the biggest thing you have learnt so far during your apprenticeship?
The importance of taking your time and asking lots of questions to consolidate your knowledge and to be more confident in the role you are learning.
What do you see as the benefits of studying through an apprenticeship?
For me, it is that you are stepping into a career gradually and you can go into it with no previous experience. The apprenticeship will give you this experience whilst you are still getting paid, meaning that you can enjoy what you're learning with less stress.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
You need to be optimistic; this is because you are going into an unfamiliar environment that will be difficult sometimes.
What are your career aspirations?
My aspirations for my career are to be as successful as I can be and to make sure that I push myself to my absolute best to give me the best opportunities in life. I aspire to be more than just a service technician as I would like to progress to Diagnostic Tech in the future.
