For the second year in a row, Renault have clinched the top spot at the Car of the Year Awards with this year’s champion being the all-electric and vivid Renault 5, sharing the accolade with the dynamic Alpine A290.

This is only the second time in the competition’s 62-year history that a brand has won the award in two consecutive years. The last marque to achieve this was Fiat in 1995 and 1996 with the Punto and Bravo, making Renault’s accomplishment all the more impressive.

Add a pop of electrifying vibrancy to your journey

The perfect combination of retro charm with futuristic performance, this all-electric supermini can travel up to a fantastic 248 miles on a single charge. It delivers a powerful performance and comes equipped with innovative technology – and with a playful personality to boot, it’s no wonder this model is an all-round winner.

Customisation is key for the Renault 5, with interior options like numbeR5, loveR5 and witch5 designs, plus striking exterior colours like Pop Yellow, Midnight Blue and Arctic White. And Renault’s groundbreaking new SAF5R programme ensures safety with 26 dynamic driving assistance features, enabling semi-autonomous driving. All just a glimpse of what the Renault 5 offers!

Verdict: Outstanding

The Renault 5 soared to the top spot, securing an incredible 353 points which put it in joint top spot with the Alpine A290. It’s the eighth vehicle from the brand to win the title and joins a line-up of impressive predecessors including the Renault 16 (1966), Renault 9 (1982), Clio I (1991), Scenic (1997), Megane (2003), Clio III (2006) and the Scenic E-Tech (2024).

The CEO of Renault, Fabrice Cambolive, spoke on the significant victory: “Within the Group, the Renault brand and Ampere, we all feel immensely proud to have taken the prestigious Car of the Year award for the second year running. Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a real game changer in Europe. It makes electric vehicles desirable as well as inspiring an emotional response. At the same time, it was designed to deliver added value for our customers. If there’s one car with the potential to transform the electric market, it’s this one.”

The future is electric

This year’s awards also marked a significant nod towards the future of sustainable driving. Not only was the top spot awarded to two exceptional EVs, but most of the finalists were either all-electric models or had an electric motor – offering either hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.
